Commenting, critique, opinion and etiquette.

Journal Entry: Tue Aug 5, 2008, 12:44 PM

This isn't going to be a rant or a guide or anything like that. It's just some musings inspired by a couple of things I read today.

In terms of critique, is it something that you're actually looking for when you submit to dA or can you take it or leave it? By the time I've gotten a picture to the point where it's finished and I'm putting it online, I'm perfectly happy with the way it looks or I wouldn't consider it finished. So I'm generally not after critique although I don't mind if people offer it, as long as they don't mind that I'm happy with my work as it is.

What I love in terms of comments is advanced interpretation. I love to read about what my pictures make people feel, what they remind people of, what emotions they stir up, stuff like that. If looking at one of my pictures inspires someone else to try a similar technique, I love hearing about it (especially if I get a link to the picture they took). I often describe my techniques in detail so that other people can understand what I did and use those techniques themselves in their own work. I don't feel remotely precious about the way I work.

I am also happy to get comments that aren't full of detail and description. Sometimes I submit stuff that is deep and meaningful, and it's lovely to get deep and meaningful comments about those pictures. But sometimes the stuff I submit here isn't serious. I'm not saying it isn't created with artistic intent, but there isn't always a lot to say about a cute picture of a kitty or a glamour portrait of a pretty girl. And that's fine with me. "I like it because the kitty is cute" or "I like it because the model is pretty and it's a good photo" are acceptable comments in my opinion. A comment like that says that you enjoyed the work and it says why, without needing to use complicated language or write an essay.

Critique is great if people ask for it and want it, and there are loads of tutorials and news articles floating around dA about how to give it (I've written a couple myself), but it's not always strictly necessary. I'd rather have a short comment from someone saying they like something I've done than have that person not comment at all because they can't think of any complex to say. Do you guys feel the same about that or would you rather ONLY have detailed comments?

I know it's kind of the done thing to say that you post work here to get detailed critique from everyone who watches you so you can improve your art, but do you ever just post something because you're proud of it and want to share it, regardless of whether people leave one line comments or huge detailed critiques or simply fav/collect your work as a sign that they love it?

If you've got an opinion on the subject, share it with me. Share it with each other. Talk, rant, vent, enthuse, whatever. Speak your mind. Be honest. Say something.

Ps. *PhotoLust's August journal is up, thanks to =neolestat and *Norrin-Radd who kindly donated subs (when I couldn't afford one) so that PL could have pictures in it's journal again. Love.

She's a great artist, even without all of the high-tech computer stuff. Plus, she's a great writer!

Goodies from my dA Print Store.

These are older photos that I've finally gotten around to submitting for print, as per print requests. I don't know who made the requests cause I always seem to miss those notices in my message centre. But if it was you - here are the prints. Enjoy.

I also have a much bigger print store (literally hundreds of photos) at Fotki. Prints are priced the same as on dA - from £0.97/$1.95 for a 4x6 inch print to £24.92/$49.95 for a 20x30 inch print (on paper).

My first book, Violently Beautiful, is now for sale through Blurb. It's a full-colour 80 page retrospective with my work from the first three years of my career spanning the genres of alternative fashion, fetish, modern pin-up, horror, portraiture and conceptual art. There are two versions, a 7x7 inch paperback Original Edition and an 8x10 inch hardback Deluxe Edition.

i think comments are very important to the progression and improvement of work whether they are in depth or not, but it is obviously a big help if someone explains why or how your picture looks or can be improved. even comments saying stuff like 'the colour of the blood looks great', since it means you can use the same colour again. the 'cool' ones are of little help, since they say nothing about why the image is cool. critique is not a massive part of commenting, and i find it isn't always needed. i think you need a good equilibrium between a comment saying why someone likes it and how it can be improved, although as you said, if you didn't think it was finished or it needed improvement, you wouldn't have put it up in the first place.
i think faves are all well and good, but they don;t tell you why people like the pic, and much of the time, they just tell you how popular the artist is (eg you and me get 100 faves and it's awesome, someone much popular gets 1000 faves and it's average) and also how many people are blindly faving fan art and such

I too post things only when I think they are complete. And though I always read and take into consideration what people have to say, I often find tha tI dont know what to reply, since, I quite like it as it is...
I fav and run on many occasions to, since I think that says it all for some images... I may not have a word to say, but just feel it is a wonderfull deviation.

I do wish though that people would sometimes make their critique helpful rather than just type something like :"its overexposed" "its dark" or something inane like that.

You're right about people saying what they do think is effective in a picture. It's so fucking hard to analyse your own work objectively. I was talking to someone from the cultural enterprise office the other day and she said things about my work that I'd never considered and had useful suggestions based on those things - stuff I would never have thought about by myself cause I'm too close to what I do.

I think you may be referring to the recent 'street' episode....I didnt want to stick my head in there, but I did read all the comments/pages....and you know the 'comment' that started it all wasnt bad at all, it was bassicly a question. Didnt put the artist or the piece down, didnt question the dd. Just was a question based on his interpretation. The people jumping to 'defend' the artist were who I felt were being rude and inappropriate comments and drug it out to long.....oh if you werent referring ot this then ignore....just was thinking about it all night...

I dont mind critiques, like you ill either say (to myself typically) ya I can see that, or naw I like it the way it is....if they are rude comments I just ignore them and more on, to each their own and those people are typically not worth trying to have a discussion with.

Im bored

That busts my head a bit too. Something I always keep in mind when I'm commenting (someone else on dA said it in a tutorial and it stuck) is that you should always assume that everything in an image in intentional. If I thought something was (to use your example) dark and it detracted from the image, for all I know the person wanted the picture to be dark so the fact that I would like it lighter is of no concern to them.
