Bitching, whining and mob mentality

Journal Entry: Thu Nov 20, 2008, 11:17 AM

I'm going to be writing about a bunch of things in this journal but as my to-do list is on my laptop which has gone to work with my husband today, chances are I'll be adding an update later when my laptop comes home.  And yet again, long journal is long.

Please go and fav this news article and vote in this poll.  Spank you very much!

:star: horror calendars
Have you made a horror photography calendar that's for sale on dA?  If you have, please send me a link.  If you haven't but are thinking of doing so, do it soon and send me a link.  Like before 5th December.  There may be some special features coming up for kick-ass dA calendars...

:star: dissing daily deviations
This is something that I've been aware of on dA long before becoming a gallery moderator and it's always annoyed me.  When someone is given a Daily Deviation, a spotlight is shone on a piece of their work for a day.  They have been given a very special surprise, a recognition of their talent and the opportunity to get a little more attention from the community as a whole.  It feels awesome to get a DD and people should be able to enjoy a day of shiny happy yumminess when their work is featured.

Unfortunately any form of additional attention on this site brings the whiners out of the woodwork and DDs often end up with unpleasant comments from bitter people throwing a jealousy fit because someone else is getting to enjoy something that they don't have.

This is NOT acceptable.  If you have a problem with a Daily Deviation that I have featured, feel free to contact me directly by note and I will be more than happy to explain my choice to you and answer any questions that you have (providing that your contact is polite and non-abusive).  Do not, under any circumstances, leave bitchy or derogatory comments on the deviation itself.  And familiarise yourself with this FAQ please:

FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

:star: art theft army

~arttheftarmy is a new group set up to help deal with off-dA art theft and copyright violation.  I know there are other groups out there doing a similar thing and there's a Rip Reporting forum</b>, but since this group is new I thought it would be good to draw attention to it.

I have never found a rip of my work by myself.  Reports of rips have always come from other people who have recognised my work elsewhere on the net and been kind enough to let me know about it.  When this happens, I report the copyright infringement to the site where it has occurred, leave a comment (if possible) on the picture stating that it is my copyrighted work and is being used without permission (I always include my name and website URL so people can contact me if they want to) and then I move on.  If I find a rip of someone else's work, I make them aware of it so they can deal with it as they see fit.

I am thankful to the people who have drawn my attention to my work being used without my permission because they have enabled me to prevent my work from being sold (in some cases) and being used in ways that I don't approve of.  ~arttheftarmy provides a resource, a group of people looking out for each other's work and helping each other.  This kind of support is especially useful if your work is being used on a site based in a country where you don't speak the language, or a site that you have never used or contacted before.

I am supportive of groups like this providing they act fairly and justly, don't harrass or abuse people here or on any other site, and remain a resource rather that an angry mob (more on angry mobs in a bit).  I would like to make it very clear that I believe abusive behaviour is NEVER the way to solve any problem.

If your work has been used without your permission, you might find some useful information in the news article I recently submitted: Dealing with online copyright violations.

My article doesn't deal with dA copyright violations.  There is plenty of information about what is an isn't permitted within dA's policies in the Help & FAQ menu</b> and if you want to know how to report rips on dA, please read this FAQ entry:

FAQ #155: How do I report a deviation which I think breaks the rules?

:star: angry mobs
I'm sure you've seen angry mobs in action around these parts before, flame-bombing people's pages and deviations, writing bitchy journals about other deviants and calling them out by name, and jumping on rabid-fan bandwagons.  Put simply, this behaviour sucks.  It's obnoxious, abusive and in the worst cases can land you with a temporary suspension or even a permanent ban.

If you see something that breaks the rules here, report it.  Reporting it for the 800th time just for the sake of making a report is not a show of support - it's a pain in the neck for staff who deal with the reports. One report is enough and the Help Desk staff and CEA team deserve to be able to work without harrassment.

Jumping into the middle of someone else's dArama or giving someone shit because of something another person said is unnecessary and pointless, and more often than not will just make you look stupid.  Encouraging your hordes of fans to flame and bitch at/about someone you feel has wronged you is unnecessary, pointless AND pathetic.  If you have a problem with someone on the site you can block them from commenting on your page or your work, deal with the issue in private through notes, or report their behaviour if they are violating policy.

FAQ #238: How do I report people for abuse, harassment, or another issue I think is a problem?

Well said indeed! There is no reason to bash people; other than perhaps envy, but then perhaps you're better bet would be to do something amazing, and be sure people get to see it, and eventually, you may get a DD on it! I know a lot of DD's are things that aren't recent, but have been in dA galleries for a while now, and diserve a bit more of a highlight! Patience, people, and quality of work! :shakefish:

I'm trying to keep a balance between stuff that's new to dA and stuff that's been here a little longer in my DD choices. It upsets me when I see people leaving mean comments on those DDs, but its awesome to see how vastly outnumbered they are by the positive comment. It's good to know that there are still lots of people out there who can be happy for someone else doing well.

That collection is for DDs I featured so I can look back at them and not forget any. Your picture is in my Delicious Fear Collection though :)

most excellent!

if there is one thing that I loved about this post it is the following:

"Unfortunately any form of additional attention on this site brings the whiners out of the woodwork"

that is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth- my god it pisses me off when I am viewing a DD and I scroll down to leave a comment and I see all of the assholish remarks - a few months back there was a DD given to a really sweet girl on a piece which dealt with a very touchy subject. I could not believe the dickhead remarks that people left her on it and all because they were jealous and pissed off that she got a DD.

Then, there are those assholes out there who have the "I have 55538383875575757 pageviews and they only have 800 so why didn't I get the DD...wahhhhhhh" syndrome and I cannot fucking stand that. When will some of these bloody little chumps figure out that pageviews do not mean anything when it comes to the quality of the art?

Jesus, I have stumbled upon sites that have next to no recognition at all and the art is out of this world. Ugh...and the other thing that pisses me off are the people who are so goddamn self- serving that they actually write to GD's or now, Moderators, and ask personally for a DD on their own damn work! :|

You could not have stated it better above...getting a DD is getting a very special gift. It is a privilege and not a right and those who get DD's deserve the recognition and the positive attention.

ok, ok, I shall now shut my mouth. Thanks for the excellent journal entry as per usual :glomp:

Yay! I love big long journal comments. I feel so lucky with the watchers I have cause you're a smart and chatty bunch and it makes writing journals so much more fun. I actually don't mind if people suggest their own work for DDs. At least I'd rather they did that than left mean comments on other people's DDs. Its impossible to please everyone and there will always be people who complain. When I've had DDs there have been people who left bitchy comments but the supportive comments far outnumbered the nasty ones, so I hope that artists who's work I feature feel the same.
